Pleurotus citrinopileatus – mycelium for outdoor and indoor cultivation

Yellow oysters (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) are known for their bright color, rapid growth, and delicate slightly peppery/floral flavor. Their mycelium is very aggressive and quickly colonizes different substrates, making them an excellent choice for both outdoor propagation and indoor cultivation.

At Les 400 Pieds de Champignon, our blocks can be used as seed to inoculate various natural substrates and produce multiple harvests.

      Outdoor propagation (recommended method)

Our mycelium blocks can be used as seed to inoculate wood chips, mulch, logs, or outdoor beds. This method allows the mycelium to spread naturally and produce season after season when conditions are favorable.

      Use as outdoor seed

      Recommended materials

      • Untreated hardwood chips
      • Clean straw or natural mulch
      • Shaded and moist location
      • Yellow oyster mushroom mycelium block

      Steps

      Prepare the area

Choose a cool, moist, and shaded location, protected from direct sunlight.

      Spread the substrate

Place a first layer of damp chips or straw.

      Add the mycelium

Break the block into pieces and spread the seed evenly over the substrate.

      Cover

Add a second layer of chips or straw to retain moisture.

      Keep moist

Water as needed to keep the substrate slightly moist, especially during warm periods.

      Results

The mycelium will gradually colonize the outer substrate and can produce several flushes of mushrooms during the warm season.

      Indoor culture in direct fruiting

      Yellow oyster – Pleurotus citrinopileatus

      • Difficulty: Beginner
      • Thermal shock: Not necessary
      • Fruiting temperature: 20 to 26 °C
      • Primordia formation: 4 to 7 days
      • Time before harvest: 2 to 4 days
      • Humidity: 90 to 95%

      Fruiting guidelines

      1) Block preparation

When the mycelium is fully colonized, cut a line “/” about 20 cm on the side of the bag using a clean knife.

Remove excess air from the bag by folding it behind the block.

      2) Maintain humidity

Mist the exposed surface 2 to 3 times a day to maintain high humidity until the primordia appear.

      3) Harvest

Mushrooms grow quickly once formed and are generally ready to harvest within 2 to 4 days.

Harvest before the edges of the caps start to dry to achieve the best texture and flavor.

      Important notes

      • A block can produce 2 to 4 harvests depending on the conditions.
      • Continue to water the same incision after each harvest.
      • Subsequent harvests will often be smaller than the first.
      • Yellow oyster mushrooms prefer warmer temperatures than other varieties of oyster mushrooms.
      • Harvest the whole clusters by gently detaching them at the base.
