Blue Oyster Mushroom Growing Kit
Pleurotus Ostreatus – mycelium for outdoor and indoor cultivation
Oysters are among the easiest and most productive mushrooms to cultivate. Their vigorous mycelium allows for excellent colonization of different substrates and can produce multiple harvests.
Outdoor Propagation
Our mycelium blocks can be used as seed to inoculate wood chips, mulch, logs, or outdoor beds. This method allows you to expand your cultivation naturally and achieve recurring seasonal yields.
Using as Outdoor Seed
Recommended Materials
-
Untreated hardwood chips
-
Clean straw or natural mulch
-
Shaded and moist location
-
Oyster mycelium block
Steps
1) Prepare the Area
Choose a cool, shaded spot, ideally protected from direct sunlight and wind.
2) Spread the Substrate
Lay down a first layer of dampened chips or straw.
3) Add the Mycelium
Break the mycelium block into pieces and evenly distribute the seed over the substrate.
4) Cover
Add a new layer of chips or straw on top to retain moisture.
5) Keep Moist
Water as needed to keep the substrate slightly moist, especially during hot and dry periods.
Results
The mycelium will gradually colonize the outdoor substrate and can produce mushrooms when conditions are favorable. With good maintenance, some setups can produce for several seasons.
Another Cultivation Method
Indoor Cultivation with Direct Fruiting
Blue Oysters – Pleurotus Ostreatus
-
Difficulty: Beginner
-
Thermal Shock: 24 hours at 4 °C
-
Fruiting Temperature: 17 to 21 °C
-
Primordia Formation: 5 to 7 days
-
Time Before Harvest: 2 to 5 days
-
Humidity: 90 %
Fruiting Guidelines
1) Prepare the Block
When the mycelium is ready to fruit, place the block in the refrigerator for 24 hours at 4 °C. This thermal shock signals the mycelium that it is time to produce mushrooms.
Using a clean, sharp knife, cut an "X" about 15 cm on the side of the bag. Remove excess air by folding the bag behind the block.
2) Maintain Humidity
Spray the exposed surface 2 to 3 times a day to maintain high humidity until the primordia (small pins) appear.
3) Harvest
Once the small mushrooms appear, they will generally be ready to harvest within 2 to 5 days.
Maintain good humidity throughout the growth to achieve well-developed mushrooms with soft and healthy caps.
Important Notes
-
One block can produce 3 to 4 harvests.
-
Continue to water the same incision after each harvest.
-
Subsequent harvests will generally be a bit smaller than the first.
-
To harvest, gently detach the cluster at the base and then cut the stem before cooking.
-
Even if mushrooms appear elsewhere on the block, continue to use the initial opening.
