Black Pearl King oyster mycelium – mycelium for outdoor and indoor cultivation

The Black Pearl King oyster mushrooms are a variety known for their large, meaty stems, firm texture, and excellent culinary quality. A hybrid between two blue oyster mushrooms, this variety produces dense and flavorful mushrooms while maintaining relatively easy growth.

Their vigorous mycelium can be used for both outdoor propagation and direct fruiting indoors.

At Les 400 Pieds de Champignon, our blocks are designed to serve as mycelium spawn to inoculate various natural substrates.

      Outdoor propagation (recommended method)

Our blocks can be used as spawn to inoculate wood chips, mulch, logs, or outdoor beds. This method allows the mycelium to naturally colonize its environment and produce multiple harvests when conditions are favorable.

      Use as outdoor spawn

      Recommended materials

      • Untreated hardwood chips
      • Clean straw or natural mulch
      • Shaded and moist location
      • Black Pearl King mycelium block

      Steps

      1) Prepare the area

Choose a cool, moist, and shaded location, protected from direct sunlight.

      2) Spread the substrate

Place a first layer of slightly damp chips or straw.

      3) Add the mycelium

Break the mycelium block into pieces and spread the spawn evenly over the substrate.

      4) Cover

Add a second layer of chips or straw to retain moisture and protect the mycelium.

      5) Keep moist

Water as needed to keep the substrate slightly moist, especially during dry periods.

      Results

The mycelium will gradually colonize the outer substrate and can produce several flushes of mushrooms during the season.

      Indoor cultivation in direct fruiting

      Black Pearl King Oyster

      • Difficulty: Intermediate
      • Thermal shock: 24 hours at 4 °C recommended
      • Fruiting temperature: 15 to 20 °C
      • Primordia formation: 7 to 10 days
      • Time before harvest: 4 to 7 days
      • Humidity: 85 to 90%

      Fruiting guidelines

      1) Block preparation

When the mycelium is ready to fruit, place the block in the refrigerator for about 24 hours to stimulate mushroom formation.

Open the bag like a chip bag and let the opening point upwards.

      2) Maintain humidity

Lightly mist the exposed surface 2 to 3 times a day to maintain stable humidity without soaking the young mushrooms.

      3) Harvest

The Black Pearl Kings are ready to harvest when the caps start to open slightly while maintaining a firm texture.

Harvest the entire clusters by gently detaching them at the base.

      Important notes

      • A block can produce 2 to 4 harvests depending on the conditions.
      • Continue to water the same incision after each harvest.
      • Subsequent harvests will generally be smaller than the first.
      • This variety prefers good air circulation to develop beautiful thick feet.
      • Excessive humidity can lead to soft or deformed feet.
