Pholiota mycelium
Mycelium of Pholiota adiposa (Pholiota adiposa) – mycelium for outdoor and indoor cultivation
Pholiota adiposa (Pholiota adiposa) is a gourmet mushroom recognizable by its slightly slimy golden-brown cap and meaty texture. Valued for its rich flavor and good productivity, it is primarily cultivated on hardwood or lignocellulosic substrates.
Their mycelium is ideal as seed for inoculating outdoor substrates (stumps, chips, hardwood) or for controlled fruiting indoors.
At Les 400 Pieds de Champignon, our Pholiota blocks are designed for simple, stable, and productive cultivation.
Outdoor propagation (recommended method)
The mycelium of Pholiota adiposa can be used as seed to colonize hardwood logs or wooded areas. This method allows for a slow but sustainable installation with seasonal harvests.
Use as outdoor seed
Recommended materials
- Logs or hardwood rounds (maple, beech, birch)
- Untreated wood chips
- Shady and humid area
- Mycelium block of Pholiota adiposa
Steps
Prepare the location
Choose a cool, very shady, and humid location, ideally in a wooded area.
Prepare the substrate
Use fresh logs or slightly damp hardwood chips.
Inoculation (seed)
Break the mycelium block into pieces and insert them between the logs or mix them with the chips to promote colonization.
Cover and protect
Lightly cover with mulch or chips to retain moisture and protect the mycelium.
5) Keep moist
Water as needed to maintain constant humidity without saturating the substrate.
Results
The mycelium slowly colonizes the wood and can produce mushrooms after several weeks to several months depending on the conditions.
Indoor culture in direct fruiting
Fatty Pholiotes (Pholiota adiposa)
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Thermal shock: 24 hours at 4 °C
- Fruiting temperature: 17 to 21 °C
- Primordia formation: 14 to 21 days
- Time before harvest: 5 to 10 days
- Humidity: 90%
Fruiting guidelines
1) Block preparation
When the mycelium is ready to fruit, place the block in the refrigerator for 24 hours at 4 °C to trigger fruiting.
Using a sharp knife, cut a slit about 15 cm on the side of the bag. Then fold the bag to remove the excess trapped air.
2) Maintain humidity
Mist the exposed surface 2 to 3 times a day to maintain high humidity until the primordia (small pins) appear.
3) Development and harvest
When the small mushrooms start to grow, they will be ready to harvest in about 5 to 10 days.
Maintain a constant humidity throughout development to obtain well-formed mushrooms with firm caps.
Important notes
- A block can produce 3 to 4 harvests.
- Always water the same incision after opening.
- Subsequent harvests are generally smaller than the first.
- Harvest by gently detaching the cluster at the base and cutting the stem before consumption.
- Maintain good air circulation to avoid deformation.
